I was encouraged to get into models, but at the same time not really... I remember that my dad got me a zero and a betty when I as 7 and some other ones, like an apache and an f-117 later on, but I built them and then that was pretty much it. He didnt encourage me after that...he never really liked models a whole lot actually and I dont know why he got me those to build. I was alwasy more into LEGOs than anything else. I just like to build and create my own things. I was encouraged a few years back in junior high by my history teacher, Mr Beltram, because I really liked history and all. He started up a club at the school and it was actually decent sized with about 15 members in it. After junior high, I actually got out of it for a year, until last year, I picked it up again, stricktly out of impulse and since then I havent stoped at all.
I honestly do believe that there should be some competitions for it. I was talking to a co-worker who works at the store I do, Monkey Depot, and I said that we should have some kind of sale. I mean, its better to sell most of what we have at a discount than to be so stin-gee as to just have everything sit there and do nothing. I was thinking like a rotation system and have certain things for sale every weekend, like one weekend have discounts on planes and the next do detail sets or something. I mean seriously, we got models coming out of the ying-yang and my boss gets more and then complains that it doesnt sell. Now, Monkey Depot sells a lot of stuff per day than most hobby shops and I cant beleve that my boss complains like that. But to solve his complaining, my buddy and I figured that if we did that, we could generate enough bussiness to satisfy our boss and to then have some kind of decent sized competition for all kinds of models.
Personally though, I've enocuraged my friends to pick up models. Some do and enjoy it, but other just lack the patients, which is the underlying problem. People just dont have enough patients today. |
