| Subject: | The HULL is JUST a Test | |

Gentlemen,
I am not going to join in this discussion too much because I simply do not understand how or why a modeling community so obsessed with accuracy would want to get into a smaller scale than 1/35. The smaller scale negates much of what everyone seems to be concerned with: displaying as accurate a representation of a vehicle as possible. In 1/48, the only way you will do much of this is by photo etch, and then, even that will be too thick for many applications. I believe that schurtzen in 1/48 should be on the order of .005 inches thick? So, how or why would anyone interested in "detail" want to go smaller? And the shelf space issue is another mystery to me. What is the average shelf, 9 inches deep? I think my 1/35 Tiger I will take about as much "free space" on that shelf as any 1/48 scale model -- especially if you put the 1/48 kit on a base and I leave my Tiger I by itself. Again, this is all a mystery to me.
HOWEVER, we did release a 1/48 scale Sherman replacement hull to "test the waters." I can tell you, sales are good, but they do not suggest the push into 1/48 is as popular as the "hype" would have us believe. From my perspective, I think the wargamers and younger, beginning modeler is more the target consumer for this scale than the average super detailer. From my point of view, I would also liek to point out that PE, turned barrels and resin detail sets will not be appreciably less to buy than their 1/35 scale counterparts. The cost of development and production -- at least here in the U.S> -- is roughly the same, but the willingness of the consumer to spend 80% of a 1/35 scale product is not as great. So, for me, 1/48 seems to be a novelty, and, from where I am in the market, I am not seeing any reason to worry about the trend -- not at this time.
Semper Fi,
Joe Bakanovic |
