DML's apparent intent, for they have so far been the company that has galumped the announced releases of smaller comapnies, is not to promote choice. Read about Robber Barons and the Standard Oil Company in late 19th and early 20th century US history. The only purpose for this sort of thing is to drive a competitor out of business, regardless of the quality of goods offered. The only up side I have seen is DML's willingness to correct the more gratuitous of the errors and detail omissions apparent in their rush to market early releases.
Look at what has happened in the SdKfz 251 ausf C market. AFV carefully planned their kits and took time to get the molds right. Reviews give AFV the clear edge in detail and overall quality, but DML rushed out their kits, offering more bells and whistles at generally lower prices, even though an accurate model is almost impossible to build from the DML kit. Getting to market first at what must be a very small profit margin has taken away sales from AFDV's better kit. You can now find the AFV kit drastically discounted just to move it off the shelves. DML is now duking it out with AFV over Tigers and 88s - I don't know whose product development came first, though AFV announced the 88 quite a while before DML did theirs, and DML has announced its intention of trumping Tristar over the PzKpfw IV ausf D. One can only suspect that there is a great deal of industrial spying going on, mostly by DML against its competitors.

I don't think DML is doing modelers a favor, though we are seemingly benefiting in the short run. If AFV and Tristar go bottom up in a market Tamiya has virtually abandoned, we'll see less choice and no competition. Where then will be the impetus to produce out-of-the-ordinary kits?
Maybe I'll change my mind when more of these kits are built up and posted to the gallery.
