Make sure you get one with proper manual controls over aperture and shutter speed.
Most consumer digitals at this price don't give much options over control. If the camrera does not pick the correct settings you will be very frustrated.

Canon A510, A520 do this. Plus other brnads have something equivalent i am sure.

Remember to budget for at least a 256 MB card. If you get the photography bug you will be wanting for every MB.
