When Tamiya and other "Metric measuring" companies entered the market in the 60s and 70s they stayed as close to the old Inches standard measurements as posible.50mm.is mighty close to the old size of the white metal figure norms of 2 inches or 54 mm. 50mm =1/35.
As Tamiya became more and more prolific,and Italeri as well , the norm became 1/35 for armor.
