According to Mr. Tamiya in his book, 1/35th was the right scale to fit an electric motor in the hull of his first AFV kit, the Panther. When that was a good seller, they decided to keep the scale the same for all future releases. At the time, many kits were 'box scale' so they did not worry about matching other manufacturers scales.
That is what he wrote, I still am curious about this as tanks come in different sizes, if he made the Panther 1/32nd he would have had even more room, and smaller tanks would be able to fit the motor also. It is really a damn shame as I also do 1/32nd aircraft, and it would be nice if they were interchangible for diorama purposes. |
