Dragon Box Art Strangeness... Sd.Kfz.265 kleiner Panzerbefehlswagen I

I know some will think that I'm a little off my nut but...

The thing that drew me to model making, way back when, was the fantastic artwork on the Tamiya boxes. When Dragon hit the streets with Mr. Vostad's work I was similarly impressed. Ron made the box art about war and the technology of war. He did not politicize his work. a GI in the Ardennes was just as gritty as a German tanker at Kursk.

Now I think that Dragon has done a great disservice to history and context. Here we have the invading Nazis. The Nazis, who violated the frontiers of sovereign countries because of the paranoid interests of a madman. The Nazis, who burned villages to the ground, who rounded up the Jews and marched them and many of their fellow countrymen into endless slavery. And here is this awful painting of the hapless refugee and her child and dog being offered a scrap of food by the noble invader. In the background is the BA-6... empty and ruined..."Here maam, a morsel for you and your dog... sorry about your dead countrymen." This takes all that we know about the war out of context. Personal kindness is possible in everyone. But there is no context provided here.

This box is a piece of mass marketing that betrays history. Box art images are generalizations about the things of war. We make allowances for their broad brush strokes because we are making models. We are not trying to empathize with personal kindness of those who fought this unjustifiable war. This is whitewashing the war and all it's motivations.
"Hey you consumer! Look how cool these machines were... and look how nice the guys were that operated them." should not be a marketing manipulation to sell these models. Dragon is not the only one responsible for this marketing nonsense...just the one I saw yesterday at my local Hobby Shop.

And remember, we are trying to attract new young modelers to the hobby. This cover does them the greatest disservice of all.

" Hey you Dragon! Get someone like Ron to paint your boxes. Someone with a sense of technilogical history."

I know this is a modeling website, but manufacturers should think about the images that they use... my opinion of course!

Thanks,

Mike
