Volkswagen was NOT Hitler's idea nor did he approach Porsche about building the familiar Beetle. Dr. Porsche was working on the idea prior to Hitler coming to power. The shape of the Beetle was developed in the mid 1930s with the idea of an air-cooled powered vehicle. The only hand that Hitler had in the development of Volkswagen was political in nature trying to drum up support for his Nazi regime. As a matter of fact there weren't any Volkswagen Beetles built at the Wolfsburg plant during the war and it wasn't until after under British control that Volkswagen Beetle (officially called Type 1) came off the assembly line. Volkswagen wasn't even the brand or name officially designated for the car. It was the KDF-wagen that roughly translated into English 'Strenght Trough Joy' wagen.
