I just read some of the stuff about the Enigma and Soviet construction somewhere down the page. I've measured up various T-54/55s over the last two decades and I can tell you the consistency of dimensions on the Soviet tanks is just that: consistent. They are very well made by ANY standards. Measurements are to the millimetre, not the nearest centimetre or even 1/2 inch. Cast and sheet metal gives different results however. The T-34's I've also measured display the same traits and they could have virtually all come from the same mould, just like a plastic kit.
All the rubbish uttered about poor Soviet production is a smoke screen. Yes, they were essentially low-tech vehicles, but they were well designed, easy to operate and very cheap to produce. That's why the tank world is populated by Russian stuff. Brilliant for low intensity warefare, cheap to buy and run, can be operated by anyone with two brain cells to rub together, plus a bloody good gun.
