The Challengers mount Chobham add-on armor on the front and side skirts. Chobham is the heavy armor that is super-resistant to HEAT warheads.
The M1 only has Chobham on the turret face and hull, just like the Challengers. The M1 sideskirts are just plain steel.
The M1A1 weighs 65 tons (M1A2 69 tons) but TIME said a fully-armored Challenger 2 with Chobham skirts weighs 100 tons. The Challenger 2 without Chobham weighs around 67 tons. Yes, Chobham is that heavy and expensive. |
