Not quite. The Shir was based on the Chieftain design but constructed with Chobham Armour and a Rolls Royce engine. It wasn't considered too expensive for the MOD, it was brand new and the replacement for Chieftain was intended to use it but still in the early design stage. When the Shir design became available it was redesigned with computerised fire control and laser designators, TOGS etc. As a stopgap until it came into production the Chieftain was upgraded with the 'Stillbrew' armour pack and TOGS.
Rememeber you can't just start sending a new vehicle out as it rolls from the factory, you have to re-equip a whole regiment. This includes all the logistics workshops, crew training etc so there is a delay between first poroduction machine and entry into service. |
