Wasn't the MBT-80 turret only a 'boiler plate' to finalise internal layout and mechanisms? I don't think that was the intended shape.
Whan Chieftain protatypes were being tested the front hull was covered in a box shaped casing to hide it's low profile from prying eyes. Car manufacturers do the same thing.
