So that the commanders can get picked off by snipers?
In the Western Desert the British commanders always attacked 'heads out'
after cupolas got a bad name in France and weren't fitted anymore (although
evidence shows that the stories were more 'apocryphal than fact). This was
OK when the distances were reasonable and close in infantry was scarce but
an awful lot of commanders still got killed.
When fighting switched to the closer quarters of Italy and France fighting
with head and shoulders showing became suicidal and Cupolas were back in
favour. Shermans had 'direct vision' armour glass and the British went for
all round view periscopes 3 of which were closely placed ahead and the one
at the rear could swing up to give an overhead view. In addition the split
hatch could be raised while it was still closed to give a direct 'peep'.
When it was open the split hatch gave protection to the sides. It fitted
directly to the hatches of Churchills and Cromwells but needed a reduction
ring to fit onto a Sherman. It wasn't used on Shermans that already had the
American version.
