Subject:  Death of the Tank-Gun + question. ** Long Post.List thread.

I guess in modern warfare, missiles are the new tank killers. Didn't analysts prophesize the end of gun-tanks to tank-killer missiles after the 1967 war? True gun battles between tanks (on the scale of Kursk) are becoming passe. In the recent Gulf War, we rarely read about M1A1 tank guns being used on tanks. Yes, there were isolated incidents. But M1's were mostly used as a "Sturmgeschutz" against Iraqi strongpoints and fanatics.

Tank gun technology is now so advanced that I guess practically any modern tank gun can knock any modern tank out without effort. Gone are the days of Shermans versus King Tigers with "tennis ball" rounds bouncing off the KT armor. The 8.8 cm was probably the first of these "one-shot" killer guns. Therefore, the fanfare surrounding tank guns sort of tapered away, since most countries that could field modern (current generation) tanks have pretty capable main armaments.

As for why the Israelis never really complained about the Sherman armor. I guess it is because they fought desert campaigns, therefore manuever becomes armor. Or maybe the opposing tanks were not well crewed (?). Also, the Shermans were quickly supplanted by newer tanks. It could also be due to the fact that the Israeli Shermans were re-fitted with BIG guns. Therefore, coupled with manuever, supplanted the meager armor on the Sherman.

My question is, what happened before the Shermans were re-fitted? How did their "tennis-ball" shooting guns fare against the Arab tanks?

Cheers!
