| Subject: | Looking for a builder for an LAV-25 for a reunion | |
| Date: | Feb 17, 2001 |
| From: | Tracy Saulino | |
Here's the situation. I am generally an aircraft modeller who enjoys occasional bouts with the heavy stuff... armour. A few days ago I was flipping channels and settled on Discovery WINGS. It was showing a piece on the LAV-25. Now, I still can't find the wings on it, but it struck me as a kind of neat vehicle. We have a modelling contest approaching here very soon, and you get door prize tickets for every model you enter up to 10. Last year we won some VERY nice kits, including a $50 one. I thought to myself - "LAV-25, huh... no tracks to link together, no cockpit... this should be sort of easy to get together in time for the contest, one more kit down on the way to finding 10."
So I found the Italeri kit, picked it up, and started trying to research the vehicle a bit. (I didn't have the presence of mind to record the show, unfortunately, and haven't found it again yet). In my researching, I found a website for a Marine Unit that went to the Gulf with their LAV-25s, and they named one of them "A Horse with No Name". This struck me as very cool and clever, so I contacted the author of the website hoping he may have some more photos. he did and was very nice. He asked if I would be willing to build a model for their upcoming reunion. They would like to offer it as an award. Unfortunately, my skills are NOT to a level that such an effort would do anything but make me hide under the modelling table, sucking my
thumb. I did let him know that I would ask around and see if I could find anyone who may be interested.
So I thought I would give a shot at asking if y'all have any ideas or suggestions for anyone to put this gentleman in contact with. He was really extra nice and sent me nice resolution photos and even told me all about how they went about painting their vehicle with NO painting skills among the whole unit and having been given only 2 days to make it a desert rather than a European arena vehicle. I'd even be willing to provide a willing builder with a
new Italeri LAV-25 kit, just for helping this guy out since I don't think I can.
Thanks much in advance for any suggestions you have!
Sincerely,
Tracy Saulino
confirmed Dauntless, P-47, and A-10 fan... but the LAV-25 sort of resembles a Warthog.... just stick some wings on it! |
