Keith,
the Fitter has been in service since the 70's and continues to do so up to these days and thus could be shown paired with a late batch M-51 Sherman.
best to my knowledge Fitters are assigned to the ordanace platoon of a battalion and are not too common.
you can find them in Infantry battalions too.
I have seen mainly 5 ton trucks (called Rios in Israel) with cranes used to haul the Merkava Continental powerpacks as I belive they are too big for the Fitter's compartment (the whole roof is hinged and can be swinged to the side if the engine or transmission cannot be passed through the roof hatch).
btw, through my service I heard people calling them "Pitters" which is of course a mistake but thats how they are known in Israel. |
