During peace time exercises held in Finland 1992-93 Our T-55's didn't have any covers fitted above the radiator - it looked completely same as the Tamiyas model straight from the box (part D18). Above the radiator, there is an adjustable grill that allows driver to control the air flow through the radiator by opening or closing the grill. Sort of grill is made to the engine cover of the Tamiya's model. The only thing that was usually kept open was the small hatch above the radiator fan (Tamiya part D3). Even so, the mesh (D7 and D8) were always closed as per Tamiyas instructions. In the narrow angled upper back armor plate (just to know how to describe it any better) just behind the mesh, there is a small bolt to support the open hatch.
At worst, the temperature went down to -33°C when we were playing with the tanks, so I suppose, it can't be any worse in Croatia either :)

Happy T-55-modelling!
