Dan,

The M1A1 and M1A2 main battle tanks carry a combat load of 40 rounds each. 17 rounds in the loaders ready rack and 17 rounds in the Tank commanders semi ready rack. The remaining six rounds are positioned in the hull to the right of the drivers compartment. Trust me I know what I am talking about on this, especially after just serving 20 yrs as a tanker with the last 15 on the M1 series.
