In the 40's/early 50's, Syria wasn't in the Russian sphere of influence.
They had tight connection with France, being a protectorate since the fall of Ottoman Empire in 1918. Lebanon and Syria were under the survey of France, what is now Israel and Palestine, as well as Jordania, were under England survey.
So, after WW II, Syria had French tanks (R 35, H35) and received German armour collected in France from scrap. That's why one of the Pz IV used and resting now in Israel has a turret from a D model with a 75mm L/48 and schurzen ! They received others from Tchecoslovakia.
Later on (around mid 50's), Syria received Spanish Pz IV (a small dozen) and some of them were even sold again to Batista's Cuba !
Weapon business is fantastic !!!
About fighting IDF with Pz IV and Sturm III, no sweat, there were Sherman in front of them (old opponent, isn't it ?), with only a handfull equipped with French 75mm from the AMX 13, at least till the end of 1956.
At this time, Syria went under Russia' influence and started to get T34/85 then T54/55. |
