Actually, the Italeri kit (also available from Revell and formerly Esci or AMT), is more accurate for the period. The current Academy kits depict the steel road wheels (as used on the M48), which were reintroduced in the early 1980's, after the Khomeini regime broke ties with the US and stopped getting spare parts. The earlier M60A1's had the aluminum wheels, which had reinforcing fins around the inner rim of the wheel (after 20 years of service, the US military decided that the aluminum wheels were too fragile, and slowly switched back to steelover the following ten years). The Esci kit has these parts, and is more detailed and generally more accurate, anyway.
The overall finish was basic light sand with a small Iranian green and white roundel national marking. Many tanks had pictures of Ayatollah Khomeini taped to the turret sides (or at least they did when official photographers were around). |
