I was the TC & Platoon leader for 7 years (70's) on the M60, M60A1, A3, A5.
Was in other countries training forein allied AFV members on M60 versions as well.
Also; As far as painting the "pipe", usually the pipe is painted same as the vehicle, but the end (exh. opening)is usually very rusty, and rust comes quickly to the pipe at the hull connection, and the bottom of the braces.
Sometimes, not always you may see an OLD pipe or replaced pipe that has light to moderate rust along its entirety, but rarely.
