I was a tank mech and Comapny Maintenance Chief for C Co, 8th TK BN, 4th MARDIV (The Tamiya Desert Storm M60A1 was one of my units vehicles while I was in the war and crewing the Company's M88A1).
This is the exhuast for the crew compartment heater. As stated earlier, this was a diesel fueld heater that used a glow plud to literally start a fire in the heater unit. This devise rarely worked, but when it did, it would cook the crew as the only settings seem to have been broke and furnace.
A couple other interesting facts to note would be that the fenders and sponson boxes on the M60's were aluminum. The front edge of the fenders was also rubber: like a debris guard you see on heavy trucks. On the USMC version, most of the bolts were either brass or zin alloy, so they could be silver and/or a brass color. These bolts were usually worn and shinny due to the crew walking over and dragging things over them, and from frequent replacement.
On many USMC vehicles, there was a bilge pump dischagr that had a rubber fitting much like a whistl. This let watter out under pressure, but would not allow rain and backflow in durring wading operations. This piece was mounted close to the personnel heater exhuast and with a slightly upward angle.
Hope this helps.
