The shield (actually arrowhead, as used in Vietnam) evolved from the
embarkation symbol the Marines developed prior to the Korean War, which in
this case was a yellow diamond enclosing the black numeral "2", and preceded
by a black "TK", thus: TK<2>. It denoted the 1st Tank Batallion; why "2"
instead of "1" escapes me. On Marine M48s in Vietnam, the diamond had
evolved into a yellow arrowhead, and enclosed "1 TK", with the "1" directly
above the "TK", and denoted the 1st Tank Batallion.

I have seen examples of arrowheads used on other Marine vehicles in Vietnam,
such as the LVTP-5, but the photos were black & white and contrasty, and I
could not tell exactly what the symbols were. But the coding described above
for M48s was very common throughout the conflict.
