It is very effective against RPGs...the slats are at a specific distance apart...a little less than an RPG round...the warhead will shred and it shouldn't even detonate if all goes well.
Slat and bar armour has been used many times since WWII....Vietnam on the Monitor boats, M113 slat armour was developed in the 1960s, Soviets T-62s in Afghanistan, BMP-3, BTR-80, Australian ASLAVs in Iraq, British Warrior and Challenger 2 in Iraq, US Army Stryker in Iraq, Canadian M113 TLAVs in Afghanistan, US Army M113s in Iraq.
