Hi Stavros. I have never seen a photo of a US Army Stryker in Iraq without the slat armor. I know some of the guys who tested and developed the slat aror at Aberdeen Proving Gound and I am 99% sure they rushed the slat armor through development and test in time for 3d Brigade of 2ID's first Iraq rotation about three years ago. I guess you might be able to do a Stryker in a maintenance depot without the slat, but even in maintenance, they would remove only the portions that blocked access to the repairs.
I assume you are having a tough time with scratch buidling that slat armor? I see now why, I had no idea the stuff was so intricate and complex! I checked out Eduard's PE slat set and it is not cheap! Go here to read all about it: http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/details/edu/detail_edu_35995.shtml
I know about the new stuff in real life, but I keep my modeling efforts to 1945 and earlier!
