There are plenty of Strykers out there without slat armor--just most (if not all) of them are in Stateside units.
I actually started building AFV Club's Stryker last night, and as far as I can tell so far it's worthy of the favorable reviews it's gotten. Sure it'd be nice to have the slat armor included, but it's still a good value compared to many other new releases of various items.
I have to admit that the parts count was a little daunting at first, but it's pretty much fallen together for me so far. I have the undercarriage and lower hull complete and most of the upper hull assembled after maybe about 8-10 hours of work on it--and probably an hour of that time was spent looking for a few tiny parts that I launched about my workspace!
About the only thing I would like to see changed on the kit would be to have the steering linkages as separate parts so the front wheels can be posed turned. Granted, you could cut the pieces apart and do it yourself, but it'd be nice and easy to have them as separate parts.
My only complaints are relatively minor, and are mostly directed at the instructions. There are a couple parts where the location is somewhat vague, and there are a couple parts that are are called out more times than they are supplied--but looking at the sprues it seems like they gave you the extras as different numbers on different sprues.
In the vagueness category, the forward suspension mounts for the second set of road wheels definitely have a front and a back, but fit either way--it took some test fitting with the suspension arms to figure out what I think is the right way.
In the not enough parts category, there are several small handholds or steps along both sides of the upper hull. I don't the instructions in front of me, but IIRC they're part F5. There are 4 on one side and 5 on the other. Unfortunately there are only 4 of each on each of the two F sprues. I did find another one that looks identical on the B sprue as B19, and looking through the instructions I did not see anywhere where that part was used. Same thing with the pulleys for the winch system (F22); instructions call for 3, but there's only 2. There is a B44 pulley which is slightly larger and unused elsewhere; looking at photos of the real thing, the pulley directly at the winch looks to be larger than the two pulleys that guide the cable to the fairlead at the front of the hull.
My +/-$0.02, YMMV...
Curtis
PS--I'm looking forward to building the MGS variant when that arrives! |
