Hi Sean,
I understand that muzzle brakes and discarding sabot shots do not always agree which eachother very well. As APFSDS-T rounds are the main AT ammo nowadays that could explain the demise of the muzzle brake?
The weight of modern MBT's can play a role too, but the muzzle brake was not just used to diminish recoil, but also to deflect the gasses away from the ground to avoid kicking up to much dust and obscuring the view from the tank.
Artillery still has them, as do lightweight vehicle low and medium presure guns that rely on HEAT for armour penetration.
But just a guess, if some ballistic expert has a better answer I'm happy to be corrected!
Cheers,
Alex |
