The main reason for change from side to side for driver location would be for better vision during highway travel, my guess.

Changes in drive train layouts are for a number of reasons.
Engine and transmission kept as a unit reduce weight & complexity (no drive shaft), and facilitate quicker and easier drive train package changes. Keeping them together also allows lower profile, as there is no drive shaft that has to run under the crew and turret structure, and removes a heat source inside the crew compartment by keeping the transmission out back.
Basic answer: better packaging.
