Most modern tanks differ quite a bit from their Wartime kin

Back in World War II, most tanks had at least two crew in the hull front. You had a driver, and a co driver/radio operator. Now there is just one crewman, as the communication gear is in the turret, and there is also no bow machinegun requiring an extra man. So the drivers position is now in the center or one side or another...

By keeping the sprocets in the back of the tank, you don't have drive shafts and clunky transmission stuff passing under the turret and taking up room in the front of the tank. The tank can sit lower since the turret doesnt have to be above a drive shaft.

Many modern tanks don't use steel armor like they used to either... they have laminate or composite armor more resistant to shaped/heat charges versus Wartime solid steel tanks and kinitic shot.

Tracks today are almost universally "live" aside from Russian stuff like the old T-55 tracks. During the War, most tracks were dead (they just hang there) aside from some US tracks like the rubber halftrack tracks.
