When I was doing my training as an armoured soldier at Bovington in the 1070's, we used to visit the Tank Museum as part of our military history lessons and in those lectures it was said that every tank has 'Little Willie' as its great grandfather and has learned from every tank developed since. Technology, combat experience, materials may have changed but on the whole tanks still do the same job.
We were told that there was lots of examination of the german tanks like the Panther and Tigers as well as some of the 'Paper Panzers', that were studied as part of the Chieftain Tanks development.
They also said that there were views that the King Tiger, if made more reliable, could have survived into the 1960's.
