Changes in technology and doctrines often force new changes and improvements.
Now we have better armor, suspensions, better engines, etc. so they are a result on deeper thinking than 60 years ago. There was a lot of rush in those times.
Thinking that the Tiger Ausf. B could have made it to the 60's doesn't seem ridiculous... Panzer IV were used in 1967 and Hetzers were used into the 70's if I'm not wrong. Not to mention that Soviet designs had a much longer life.
Tanks as the Merkava were conceived the other way around, with front engine and transmission, etc. So while there are obvious changes, not everyone thinks the same. Focusing on the German development, I would like to hear what planners thought when designing the Leopard 2 for example...
