Something that interests me is the difference between US/British tanks and German ones today. In WW2 the Sherman was lightly armoured, easy and cheap to build and lightly armed (at least up until the Firefly and post war). The German tanks of WW2 were heavily armed and armoured but slow, and expensive and time consuming to build.

Fast forward to 2008 and the two 'best' MBTs of today, the Challenger 2 and Leopard 2A6 (Abrams is getting a bit long in the tooth now).Whilst both tanks have similar guns, the British tank is heavier, slower and more expensive. I spoke to a C2 crewman who was on exercise alongside Dutch Leopards. He said the Leopards were so fast and agile, he hoped he never had to into combat against them.

So, a complete reversal it seems. The UK and US going the same way the Germans went in WW2 and the Germans doing the opposite. I don't think that Britain or the US has exported any Abrams or C2 (although we gave Jordan some C1s), whereas Leopard is probably the most exported MBT of today. C2 and Abrams though are both battle proven, we'll have to wait and see how the Canadians get on with their new Leopards in Afghanistan.

Just my tuppence worth.
