Yes, the Lord Strathcona's Horse arrived with open topped M10's that were unsuited to Korea's terrain (not to mention its weather). They received Shermans from US stocks.
The Thunderbolt VII kit is the best HVSS Sherman available, though you will need to replace the kit's T-66 tracks with the double pin T-80 tracks from AFV Club for a Korean war vehicle. It will also need the late style exhaust (included as "not for use" in the Dragon kit), but you'll need to add the hinges along its top edge yourself. It will also need a first aid kit on the left hull side and the infantry phone box on the upper tail plate (both available as resin bits in Verlinden's old but useful "Sherman Update" set, or you could scratchbuild them from styrene).
An alternative to the Thunderbolt VII kit is the Albin Irzyk Sherman released by Dragon at their convention a couple of years ago. It has the later track in the box, but it has their older HVSS suspension from the 1990's--not bad, but not great, either. The rest of the parts are from the recent Battle of the Bulge M4A3 VVSS kit. |
