Gentlemen,

While the larger gun/round of the 120 does have it's advantages, it should be remembered that the decision to go Smoothbore has to do with maintaining the effectiveness of the HEAT rounds whose performance deteriorates when spun from a Rifled barrel. The British 120mm gun on the Challenger series is Rifled, as is the French gun on the Leclerc. As a matter of
fact, the French have developed a counter-rotating HEAT round which is designed to have the the outer casing spin with the rifling, while the main projectile core remains relatively static.
