Andy was pretty well correct, as well as previous post regarding a bigger HESH or HEAT capacity. But primarily to get a faster penetrator round!

As armour effectiveness increased the use of fin stabilised rounds saw a trend to smoothbore - ie finned penetrators are less accurate when a spin is imparted (thru rifling effect on the sabot) Therefore slipping drive bands actually HESH and HEAT are also degraded by spin.

Trials have been undertaken with a 140mm barrel, but you start hitting design constraints - bigger round, more recoil, bigger turret ring, bigger overall vehicle, more weight and on and on..
Also there are limits of tradiional propellants - theoretical speed of exploding gases. blah blah blah.
