| At least one such vehicle turned up in an Iraqi depot, presumably the source for this vehicle. I have seen several photos from third world nations (notably Pakistan) of what appear to be M36B1 tank destroyers. However, I greatly doubt that they were from the tiny batch actually constructed during the war (only 187), particularly since this vehicle has the postwar gun. I suspect that many were rebuilt by the user countries, recycling M36 turrets onto Sherman hulls. The advantages are obvious, as the Sherman had heavier armor all round and a hull mounted machine gun, and it would simplify logistics if other armored units were also using conventional Shermans. Since both vehicles used a 69-inch turret ring, the swap would be easy enough. |
