| Photo is actually a still taken from a newsreel shot in August 1944 at Mailly le Camp east of Paris. It shows the third company of the Heer 503 Schwere Panzer Abteilung in training. They had been pulled out of Normandy, leaving their remaining Tiger I tanks with the second company, to transition to the Tiger II. The company received 12 tanks with the old (Porsche) turret and two with the production turret (numbered 300 and 301). They drove through Paris en route to the front, but were subjected to air attacks. At that point, the Normandy front collapsed, and in the ensuing chaos, most had to be blown up when they broke down or ran out of fuel. However, two tanks had broken down during the demonstration for the newsreels at Mailly le Camp, and Lt. Von Rosen arranged to have the orphaned tanks recovered before the Allies overran the facility. These "Porsche" King Tigers rejoined the batalion at Paderborn where it was brought up to strength in September. The unit was again filmed for the newsreels before being entrained for Budapest. |
