| Subject: | Composite hull HVSS Shermans?? | |
| Date: | Jan 4, 2006 |
| From: | Kurt Laughlin | |
"Can anyone tell me how many M4's were equipped with the HVSS suspension during WWII in the Pacific theater?"
None - in the Pacific or anywhere else for that matter. Are you sure it's a composite hull? Can somebody provide further reference to those photos, or scans?
Composite hulls (i.e., cast glacis with welded plates elsewhere) were only used on M4s and M4A6s built Detroit Tank Arsenal. The M4A6 was little more than a prototype and can be ignored. M4 production ended at DTA in January, 1944. HVSS did not appear on production tanks until September. And no, there were no HVSS field or depot conversion during WW II.
No composite hull M4s mounted 105mm howitzers, except for a handful of trial vehicles.
