Dunkelgelb base coat with Olivgrun and Rotbraun oversprayed in irregular, soft-edged bands, all with Zimmerit coating. First company had Tiger II in Normandy, second and third companies initially equipped with Tiger I. Third company was later pulled out to re-equip with Tiger II (their remaining Tigers went to the second company). Third company re-equipped at Mailly le Camp east of Paris, and was filmed for the newsreels (stills from this film provide the familiar "King Tigers on the firing range" published in most books). The front collapsed before they reached the front, however, and all were lost en route (many blown up when they broke down or ran out of gas). Two broke down during the demonstration for the newsreels at Mailly le Camp and were recovered during the retreat. These were the two Porsche turret vehicles seen with the 503rd in Hungary that winter.
Nearly all the "official" German photos of the King Tiger depict the 503rd, just one of those accidents of history (notably the "tanks being painted," "tanks in review" and "tanks in Budapest" photo sequences used in most Tiger books). |
