The chronology of the WW2 era M4A1 was like this:

1. direct vision port, sm hatch, 75mm (sometimes had applique welded on)
2. non-direct vision hull, small hatch, 75mm (welded applique not uncommon at all)
3. small hatch 75mm, but with integrally cast thickened armor (at same locations where previous applique was welded)
4. switch over to large hatch hulls, still 75mm, cast-in thickened hull slabs. Most of these were used as duplex drive swimming tanks
5. M4A1 with T23 76mm turret, wet stowage ammo bins located on floor -- no applique or thickened armor as sponsons no longer held ammo

Number five is what is in the Italeri M4A1 kit. Hope this helps. Feel free to email me offline if you need more info.
