Stephen,

The M4A1 wet storage or big hatch hull did come from the factory with applique armor. there were some with thickened armor (initial hulls) over the vunerable areas. That doesn't mean that applique could have been added in the field. Applique armor was added to dry storage Shermans to help protect the armor over the areas where ammunition was stored inside the tank and to build up the area of the gunner in the turret that was thinned on the inside.
