Just to clarify Mike:

All Shermans with T23 76mm turrets had wet stowage AND their ammo bins were located beneath the turret -- obviating the need for the three previous hull plates. Some tanks had huge slabs added (cf. M4A3s in late war), cut from KOd tanks. This was to increase overall survivability and not a solution to the previous weakness of the sponson ammo bins.

75mm gun tanks that had wet stowage (M4A3 lates (ala Tamiya kit)and some M4A2 lates, I believe) wouldn't have had the applique side plates either.
