I've just been reading "Last Laurels – The German defence of Upper Silesia January – May 1945", by Georg Gunter, ISBN 1874622655.

Page 240 – RE: Jagdpanzer IV/L70, Leutant Siegfried Baier. 2nd Kompanie (2./Panzerjger Abteilung 43.)

The L48 was the 7.5cm anti-tank gun with firing pin ignition. The L70 assault gun 7.5cm gun with electrical ignition.

Then I got into my new Jagdpanzer, had an explosive shell loaded, and intended to shoot the observer down with the new L70 cannon. It had an electrical firing mechanism, quite modern. First shot: Misfire! Wait the prescribed time, then unload. Eject the round, reload, and again a misfire! The electrical emergency firing mechanism also failed. Third shot: Misfire! Then I had the breech block open, and in doing so, established that the ignition was probably not working because the breech block mechanism had not been properly de-greased. This was the case with all the new Jagdpanzer IV that had come to the division only a few days before. As quickly as possible, the breech block mechanism was dismantled and cleaned on the spot. Afterwards the contacts worked without a problem.

I know it's not strictly modelling related, but can anyone tell me how this electrical firing mechanism worked. I assume the pin method refered too is like my old bolt action rifle.
