| You're right about the firing pin type guns, they work just like a rifle, with a spring loaded pin striking the primer in the shell. Most German tanks and a lot of their other self propelled guns used an electric firing mechanism however. These shells had a different type of primer that isn't impact detonated. The gun has a spring loaded point that contacts the primer and when the gun is fired, an electrical current travels through the point and causes the primer to ignite the shell much like a spark plug in an engine. These guns usually contained a magneto to create a charge in case the main electrical system failed, so the gun could still be fired. |
