There are photos of British or Cdn DD tanks, after arriving inland, fighting with their canvas just lowered. As it was a fire hazard (there's one photo of Tommies trying to smother a lit canvas frame with shovels of dirt), the crews quickly removing the canvas and other gear which could impede their role as gun tanks. There are photos of DD tanks (US and British) tanks with only the canvas removed. Some even are pictured having the lower front right frame bent lowere to allow clearance for the hull .30MG.

Later after the beachhead is secured, photos of American ex-DD tanks show them cleared of most fittings. I have a photo of an ex-DD M4A1 barren of most DD fittings except the extended headlight guards. The sprocket mounting plate on the idler and propellor fittings have been spotted in stripped ex-DD tanks, too. I guess these weren't worth the trouble to remove them.
