The tracks of WW II german AFV were cast steel. the colour is a dark grey. It does not get as rusty as sheet steel. We have two WW II AFV in our museum, a SdKfz 7 and a StuG III. the tracks are not rusted. in a wet environment they will corrode in a very dark brown.
but new, the tracks were not primered or painted. they were cast metal (like gun metal).
