John,

Not all kit bashing is bunk, but a fair amount of it is, as it's based on printed drawings that in themselves (by their very nature) cannot be accurate in any objective sense, as I have already explained. However, there is a lot you can interpret from drawings, if you know what you are looking at. There is no substitute for original research on a real vehicle, but if you can't get to a museum or army base, or even to the foreign country where the tank is, drawings will have to suffice. As a for instance, I did a comparison article in Military Modelling a couple of years ago on the T-34/85 kits from Tamiya, DML and Italeri. A trip to Bovington Tank Museum, armed with camera, measuring tape and protractor was undertaken. I measured lengths, angles, thicknesses, etc on three different vehicles and was amazed how close they all where. I divided the figures by 35 and then measured the kits. The DML kit was the best, in fact just about spot on in every respect. BUT people still moaned and groaned about it. I could never work out why, as DML really (I can say this, hand on heart) did their homework on the kit.

Regards,

Bruce
