The Germans had thousands of diesel trucks, especially their heavy 6 x 4's and the 4.5 tonne Maultier and don't forget the 11,800 Einheitsdiesel they made. The Italian trucks they used were also mostly diesel and the heavy Tatra trucks. Unfortunately none of this answers the original question. I have seen a water can with a white W so why not a D for diesel?
