Paul,
Page 16 there is a line drawing illustrating the airflow through the vents and engine compartment. There are "swing" dimension lines and call out arrows but no labels showing the flaps.
What is mentioned as being armored (page 29) is the three paralell louvers. "In the Ausf B and C cooling air intake and exhaust vents, three paralell horizontal louvers and two vertical supports were designed to retard projectiles and bullet splash from entering the engine compartment. This design was changed in the Asf. D & E to two paralell horizontal louvers and four vertical guards with additional internal bullet splash guards."
You are right in that there is no mention (at least I couldn't find it) of the intake flaps. Being that they are just sheet metal and simply to stop air flow, I don't think they'd stand up tp a hard stare much less attack of any kind. |
