Hi Rick,
I think the "at Stalingrad" caption may be wrong as per the camo pattern (which a previous post referenced). But who knows. Maybe the model is painted incorrectly and the real vehicle (if it exisited) did serve in the Stalingrad campaign. As to my V-2 support vehicles theory, I offer the following thoughts.
I have seen pictures of several SdKfz 7 (which is the 8-ton soft skin halftrack and not the Famo)modified as launch support vehicles for the V-2. One was an armored cab version with observation post and, I think, the launch controls. They could also tow the V-2 launch pad which was broken down into easily transportable and erectable sections.Launching a V-2 was not as elaborate a process as we may think and just added to the terror of the weapon. The concept was to make the V-2 launch sites as mobile as possible so that they could not be detected and destroyed by allied air forces. If I am remembering correctly a decent quantitiy of the V-2's fired at England during the war were launched in this "shoot and scoot" method.
I also remember that a French (?) company made conversion kits for most of the SdKfz 7 V-2 launch support vehicles back in the 1990's when DML first released their 1/35th scale V-2 rocket kit.I any of you "old timers" (like me) remembers these conversion kits please give me a hand so I don't sound like Grandpa Simpson making up stories of the good old days. LOL.
Thanks,
